June 1, 2009 at 9:35 pm | In Personal | 1 Comment

May 25, 2009 at 11:43 pm | In Personal | 1 Comment

May 25, 2009 at 12:21 am | In Personal | 1 Comment

Sunk costs

April 11, 2009 at 12:03 am | In Life | 2 Comments

Many times in life, I’ve heard people say things like I’ve studied this for years, of course I should go into this field so that what I did for the past few years don’t go to waste. Or things like I’ve paid for this food, I should finish it so that it doesn’t go to waste. I could come up with a million things about how one would say that he/she shouldn’t or should be doing something just because they’ve already gotten themselves involved.

In microeconomics, we learn about sunk costs. Sunk costs are costs that can’t be recovered once they have been incurred and shouldn’t affect a decision maker’s choice because a decision should be assessed exclusively on its own merits. In life, it should be the same. So what if you’ve studied something for years? Does that mean you should go into that field even if you don’t like it and risk your own future? So what if you’ve paid for some food? It doesn’t mean you should finish it all and end up being uncomfortable by overeating.

Being a chinese-ed, I’ve been taught for the past 25 years of my life not to waste. Time to practice some microecons theory in my life. Do what is right not based on what have happened but what would happen.

Close to you

Close to you, originally uploaded by simplysu.>

On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue.

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around.
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.

Friends

Fall is here, hear the yell
Back to school, ring the bell
Brand new shoes, walking blues
Climb the fence, books and pens
I can tell that we are going to be friends

Yes I can tell that we are going to be friends

Walk with me Susie Lee
Through the park and by the tree
We can rest upon the ground
And look at all the bugs we’ve found
Safely walk to school without a sound

We safely walk to school without a sound

Yes,  it’s the day. No, I don’t mean Valentine’s day. I mean the day the exams and assignments are over! hahaha. :p (As you can see, I’m on a after exams kind of high.)

I finally ended my hermit life and found time for my walks. It’s been way too long since I went for one. I had never ever took walks when I was in Malaysia. Evening walks with parents, yes. But not the kind where you just take a walk and just breathe in life.

It all started happening after I picked up photography. From time to time, I’d just pick up the camera and go around the neighborhood. And the thing is, although it’s the same old neighborhood, I still always manage to discover new things.  Always.

These plum blossoms I’ve got here, they’ve been screaming for my attention for the whole of last week. Every time I cycle to school, I can hear them screaming “Where’s your camera???”. But I just couldn’t find time. I could only pray hard that they stay put for me until after the exams. And stayed they did! :p

Anyway, a little too late, but Happy Valentine’s!

(* They may seem like cherry blossoms. But nope, they are plum blossoms. Cherry blossoms will have to wait till April! :) )

Happy Chinese New Year!

Red, the auspicious color, originally uploaded by simplysu.

It’s pretty late now to be blogging about Chinese New Year since I’m sure most people would have already done so by now. After all, whether in Japan’s time zone or Malaysia’s time zone, it is already the 2nd day of the Lunar New Year. Nevertheless, Happy Chinese New Year!

It’s been two years now since I went back Malaysia for the celebration. I remember I never used to care much back then. Of course when we were all little, we were happy with the new clothes and the ang pows. But as I grew older, the excitement decreased along the way. It eventually became just another holiday. That is until I came to Japan.

When you are in a foreign land, you tend to even celebrate trivial festivals just to feel more at home. But even then, you still can’t prevent the pang of loneliness when you call home. Everyone wishes you a Happy New Year and you have a great time talking and joking and for a moment you feel like you are back home with them. But when the time comes for you to hang up and return to reality, you just can’t help wishing you were home too.

If you are back home with your loved ones during this festive season, do appreciate it. I can assure you that once you don’t have it, you will miss it.

Here’s wishing everyone a warm Chinese New Year filled with love!
